We are working in memory of the 25,000 infants, toddlers and children that have been killed by cancer in the United Sates in the past 10 years alone.
We are working on behalf of the 150,000 kids that have been diagnosed with cancer in this country over that same decade.
And most importantly we are working on behalf of all of their families – families that have been tossed into the deep end of cancer where the stakes are the lives of our children. Six years ago my sons doctors told us that we had exhausted all known curative options so we began searching for other doctors and researchers across the country who shared our hope that my son did not have to die.
What we discovered was a horrific landscape bereft of funding to save these kids as seemingly every researcher could do nothing but fight for funds just to try to keep their labs open instead of focusing all of their energy on their research. Meanwhile, the most important and vulnerable citizens continued to die without hope or options and still no one stood up to take notice.
We were fortunate to find an extraordinary clinician and researcher that offered hope to my son and has managed to keep him alive. This doctor has led the formation of a national consortium – the NMTRC – dedicated to saving kids and they have accomplished so much in a short period of time. As a member of the Parent Advisory Board it has been a pleasure to work with the NMTRC and in working collaboratively with this team of researchers and physicians it has been an incredible experience to see that the work we fund directly impacts the lives of children. We have seen children on NMTRC trials living longer and with better quality of life, children including my son.
We will continue to work to help give this team the resources they need in order to achieve their goal – to save KIDS with cancer and to BEAT NB.
