CLASSIC 8 GIRLS LACROSSE TEAMS UP WITH GOLD IN SEPTEMBER TO FIGHT CHILDHOOD CANCER

11 Programs Join Forces Off the Field

DELAFIELD, WIGold In September (G9) is pleased to announce the support of 11 girl’s lacrosse programs within the Classic 8 Conference. The initiative, which is called LACROSSE vs. CANCER – Teaming Up to Fight Childhood Cancer, has a goal of raising $40,000 this season.

Schumacher was overwhelmed by the support of the lacrosse community and the receptiveness towards the invitation to participate. “There are 16 girl’s programs within the Classic 8 Lacrosse Conference, which represent 29 Junior Varsity or Varsity teams. We have 20 teams who have signed on.”

According to Schumacher the initiative gets to the very heart of what the sport of lacrosse is all about. “Lacrosse was developed by Native Americans as a way to solve conflicts and develop solutions. It was also a way for tribes to build unity with a poignant reminder that the key to survival is friends and allies. In addition to the competitive aspect of the modern-day version of the game, it is also about respect, hard word and determination. Having teams that would otherwise be rivals all join together for such an important cause is encouraging, but not surprising based on what I know of this amazing group of coaches and players,” Schumacher notes.

The initiative also teaches the players a valuable lesson about community outreach. “This is an idea I have been toying with for a while now. I wanted to come up with something that would not only create a spirit of camaraderie on our team, but across the entire conference, while generating a little friendly competition. Community outreach like this initiative also causes the girls to look outside of themselves and their school to make an impact on something important. Something that is bigger than just our small team in our small town, something that could potentially help save lives,” Schumacher notes.

Choosing Gold In September to receive donations was a logical choice, given the organization’s association with the lacrosse community. G9 Founder, and high school junior, Annie Bartosz, was a player for Arrowhead, and Coach Schumacher serves as G9’s Public Relations and Marketing Director. “We are thrilled to have the support of the Classic 8 Girls Lacrosse program. It is heartwarming to see high school sports programs come together to support childhood cancer research. This is a representation of the mission of G9 to encourage everyone to do a little bit to make a big impact,” notes Sarah Bartosz, President of Gold In September.

The Classic 8 LACROSSE vs. CANCER initiative begins April 15 and runs through May 15th.  The teams involved in the initiative include Arrowhead Red (JV/Varsity), Arrowhead White (JV/Varsity), Waukesha (JV/Varsity), Kenosha (JV/Varsity), Cedarburg (Varsity), Mukwonago (Varsity), Sussex (JV/Varsity), Homestead (JV/Varsity), Franklin (Varsity), Wauwatosa (JV/Varsity), Oconomowoc (Varsity) and Kettle Moraine (JV/Varsity). Each team has a goal of $2,000 during the competition.
