Kids – Why We Fight
Austin
In June 2012, at sixteen months old, Austin was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma. His parents had taken him into the emergency room after he exhibited some fussy behavior, low grade fever and trouble sleeping. Doctors discovered a large mass in his abdominal region that had encased his aorta and vena cava and displaced many of his organs. Due to its placement, the tumor was inoperable. Chemo started right away. In a few short months Austin has endured countless treatment, blood transfusions, fevers, infections and more than his share of time in a hospital bed. He is now preparing for a stem cell transplant. Hang in there Austin, we’re rooting for you!! facebook.com.

Get Well Gabby Foundation
The Get Well Gabby Foundation was founded in memory of Gabby Vogel. Gabby was diagnosed with Diffuse Intra Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a malignant brain tumor, at the age of five. Despite chemotherapy and radiation, Gabby passed away just a month before her sixth birthday. Her parents say she will always be remembered for “her spunky spirit, her love for princesses, swinging on the swings, wearing sparkly shoes, and her love for the color pink.” The Get Well Gabby foundation strives to raise money for childhood brain cancer research, provide resources for families navigating the cancer world, spread awareness of all childhood cancers and ultimately, find a desperately needed cure. Kaitlyn Vogel, Gabby’s older sister, put it best saying, “without kids, there can’t be any grown ups.” getwellgabby.org.
Pajamas for Awareness
We recently came across the story of a mother who is helping raise awareness for childhood cancer by wearing her pajamas! Inspired by the Pjammin organization, Charys (who’s son Ethan was diagnosed with stage 3 neuroblastoma in 2008 and has been NED since 2010) organized a day for her classical orchestra to rehearse in their pajamas. On March 15th, Germany’s Frankfurt Radio Symphony will ditch their tuxes and floor length dresses and come to rehearsal in their comfiest clothes. The event is being picked up by local news, and the following day’s children’s concert will be streamed on the Symphony’s website and broadcast to the local pediatric oncology ward. What an awesome idea!! pjammin.org.
